2022 Preview: Saanich Express

SAANICH EXPRESS

LAST SEASON: 5-2
PLACE: 2ND
PLAYOFF RECAP: 2ND IN PNWJLL PLAYOFFS IN 2019
PROVINCIALS: 2ND (SILVER)

The Saanich Express finished 2021 with another 2nd place finish in league standings. With last season being a COVID-19 exhibition season, the Express hope that 2022 will be a scary year for the opposition. Governor Andrea Churchill has  coaches Tyson Leies and Darcy Tytgat returning as conductors of the train while they also welcome Coach Dane Sorensen to the coaching staff.

The Express will look to 3rd year Goaltender Riley Gains to back-stop the squad (.759 SV%, 8.04 GAA), while looking to a surfeit number of players to bolster the offensive output. The freight train have lost the likes of Mike Johansen, John Spaans, Dylan Martin and Greysen Thompson from their potential roster to B1 programs but are quite confident that they have found the right compliment of players to fill the voids and vie for a league title.

The Express will look to Tory Bains (19G, 8A, 27PTS), Brett Bilodeau (8G, 11A, 19PTS), Will Hale (10G, 7A, 17PTS), Mason Lo (5G, 12A, 17PTS) and Robbie Walker (2G, 9A, 11PTS) as well as a number of newcomers to lead the team offensively and lead a good returning group for the upcoming season. The defensive core is missing some key names from 2019 due to graduation but the likes of Tyson Barnswell, Robbie Tytgat, Jason Bobroske and Brayden Flynn will be looked at as the glue to hold them together and lead their returning back-end roster. There are a large number of graduating midgets that will steady this squad providing they are not on a Junior A or B1 team this upcoming summer.

The Express train will be stopping at the Panorama Arena this summer; delivering action to the Saanich Peninsula in 2022.
